CHARACTER
Name: Tatsumi Kanji
Canon: Persona 4
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Wing Color: Baby blue with pink under feathers
Canon Point: Right before the beginning of Persona 4 Arena, so 6 weeks after the True End of the original game. (With a maxed out Emperor S.Link)
Canon Point Explanation: He has none of the memories from Arena (so, he's never met the P3 cast) and he's looking forward to his Senpai returning from the city.
History: Kanji at the MST wiki
Personality: (Despite his tough appearance, Kanji enjoys to sew and knit. Yep, you read that right. This tall (he’s 6’) and rough looking guy likes to do some decidedly not very masculine hobbies. That could probably be blamed on the fact that his family owns the local textile store in Inaba and he’s the only son. However, he really just enjoys his hobbies and he doesn’t really care what anyone thinks. (Including you.)
At least, that’s what he’d like for you to believe. The fact of the matter is that Kanji cares very much what others think of him. He has tried to balance out his hobbies and his father’s last words to him about being a “real man”. Sadly, he is unable to do this and has thus begun to rebel against the loneliness that his “strange” hobbies have forced him into. Girls find him strange and creepy for doing “girly” things and guys teased and picked on him until he started to fight back.
As such, he spent a lot of time angry at those around him, while really wanting to have friends. When he first shows up as a character of interested in both the anime and the game, it is because he is on a news program, beating up a biker gang. Most of the kids in the school believe that he is now the leader of said gang, but he has nothing to do with them. Really.
~ "Underestimate me, and this is what you get!" ~
When he is later asked about the incident, he tells the Investigation Team that he was only trying to get the gang to go away so his mother could sleep, since the loud noises were keeping her awake at night. In the anime, the protagonist sees Kanji in the halls after seeing him on the Midnight Channel—making him a marked future victim of the killer of Inaba—where the taller boy drops a cute, pink, knitted doll. Kanji is, of course, extremely embarrassed and becomes a little aggressive as he attempts to get away completely. (And though this is a dumbing down of the actual development that his S.Link with the protagonist goes through, it’s not exact and it’s fairly superficial. Therefore, it’s going to be ignored as nothing but an example of his attitude.)
When he meets Naoto, he finds the young detective attractive, but believing she is a guy, Kanji begins to question his sexuality. When he is abducted into the TV world, his dungeon is a steamy, questionable bath house filled with sweaty, well-muscled shadows. The battle with his Shadow is filled with questionably effeminate behaviour, meaning to remark on the fact that he might be homosexual. However, when it came down it, Kanji’s real problem is that he’s terrified of rejection, no matter the gender of the person. When he realizes this, through the help of the protagonist and the rest of the Investigation Team, he punches his Shadow in the face, knocking it out before accepting that as a part of himself. (He is the only member of the team to strike his Shadow.)
~ "It ain't a matter of guys or chicks... I'm just scared shitless of being rejected." ~
During his development with the rest of the team, he learns to become more comfortable with himself. He shows that he is a normal teenage boy with normal desires on the school camp-out by getting a nosebleed when Chie and Yukiko dress up in skimpy bathing suits. He also tries to prove his manliness to Yosuke by rushing into the girls’ side of the encampment, despite the fact that a very hostile teacher (Mr. Morooka, AKA King Moron) was patrolling to keep the boys from being in the girls’ tents. He takes the teasing very well, for all intents and purposes, but it is only when Naoto is involved that it becomes an issue and you can see his shy side come out.
His Social Link is personified by the Emperor Arcana and begins in the game under the rumour of him bullying other students. The Protagonist can find him in the practice building near the sewing room. After asking to speak to Kanji, he then confronts him on the Flood Plains near the River, where Kanji reassures him that the accusations are false and the Emperor S. Link reaches level one.
At level 3 of the S. Link, the Protagonist has the option to encourage Kanji to make dolls for a young boy to help him with a girl he likes. This will also help Kanji to find the courage to sell said dolls at the textile shop his family owns. At the end of the Emperor S. Link (level 10), Kanji has a heart-to-heart talk at the Dojima residence where it is revealed about the complete reason for his sexuality confusion and how he has resolved it within himself—to do everything 100% and that he’s accepted completely his hobbies. He gives the Protagonist a cute phone strap and his Persona evolves to Rokuten Maou. He even teases that he’s going to start a puppet-making class that is to be held in his senpai’s room.

Strengths
His Persona is that of Take-Mikazuchi (later Rokuten Maoh at the evolution of his S.Link with the Protagonist), a lightning-based entity. He also deals very heavy physical damage and can buff a single ally in battle for three rounds with increased attack (depending on which traits the player chooses to keep during the game play for Kanji’s Persona).
He uses his physical nature, coupled with a blunt weapon, to attack. His first weapon is a shield and can use a desk, a folding chair, and sheet metal to basically smack the crap out of the Shadows. Also, his special attack, Atomic Press, is an area of effect physical attack that can hit every enemy on the field of battle for at least half their health. His particular fighting style is called grappling and is really best used for street fighting, as he was wont to do before the Protagonist showed up.
Mental: After having to confront his inner weaknesses, Kanji seems a little easier in his own skin. Slowly, he realizes what it means to be him and that his likes and dislikes aren’t anywhere near as strange as he previously thought. That to be different is okay, because none of his friends are particularly “normal” either. (It also helps him to find out that Naoto is a girl, meaning that he’s not actually gay.)
Emotional: With the help of the rest of the Investigation Team, and the protagonist specifically, Kanji is a happier guy. He’s not picking fights with biker gangs. He’s even attempting to get along with his mother. He’s doing nice things for random kids on the street. (Mainly when it comes to cute plushies.) In other words, Kanji has finally found a group that accepts him and that stabilizes his violent tendencies. The fact that he can harness his anger fairly productively in the TV world, through his Persona, also helps him to keep the lid on his violent temper as well. If only he could watch his mouth…
Weaknesses
Mental: Despite his acceptance of his feelings and habits when he faced his Shadow self in his dungeon, Kanji still has trouble expressing his feelings and likes and dislikes verbally. Yes, he likes what he likes, but it would take an act of Parliament to get him to admit it. The term tsundere is one that seems to be made just for him, especially if you look at his relationship with his mother. He loves her. He would fight an entire biker gang for her to get a good night’s rest. But he is physically incapable of admitting that he was worried about her when he found out she went to the hospital. In fact, he even called her an old cow and a hag.
And admit that he likes Naoto? Would never happen.
Emotional: Due to his tsundere attitude, Kanji uses his hot temper to cover up his emotional turmoil. And turmoil is pretty accurate. He hates cops (with good reason) and has trouble from showing his extreme dislike on both his face and in his tone of voice. It’s only the protagonist’s steady and calm attitude that helps him keep things in check. If he didn’t have the chance to go blow off steam in the TV world, he would be fighting biker gangs again.
And again, he can’t admit to his mother that he loves and worries about it. He covers it up with being rude and running away and hiding. And he spends most of the time around Naoto blushing and looking away from her, unless he has a point that he must shout out. Like how she was stupid to use herself as bait for the “killer” that was throwing people into the TV world after they appeared on the Midnight Channel.
Anything else?: I am not bringing him with anything from Persona 4 Golden (seeing as how I haven’t beaten it enough to get a good grasp of his extra skills or the whole bike skills bullshit.)
SAMPLES
First Person: Training Wings thread
Third Person:
So this wasn’t Inaba, and he was okay with that, he guessed. Not really, but he kept trying to tell himself that he was okay with that. Senpai was here. Naoto was here. The only person missing was his mom. (Not that he missed that old hag. She was such a pain in the ass!)
Well, he was slowly fitting in. He’d met some…interesting people. There were people that he knew—from books, movies, television—at least superficially, so it was a little strange at the beginning. But, after a while, he’d become used to seeing them. Kinda.
And if he missed certain others, well, that was just to be expected, right?
It had taken a while for him to come to grips with the fact that time back home had pretty much stopped for everyone. That he’d come back to the beginning of Golden Week during his junior year at Yasogami High, back to the day where he was waiting for Senpai’s return to Inaba with the rest of their friends. (Back to missing Naoto while she was away and still being too damn shy to actually tell her that he liked her.)
But, today, he was determined to just sit down at the fountain in the center of the village and watch as everyone went along their daily business. As they did that, he was keeping an eye out for anything that would inspire him. Just because he wasn’t home didn’t mean he had to be idle right? And, school here was too strange; although, he might try looking into that art club thing at the recreation center once he figured out just when they met and what they did. He hadn’t met any members face-to-face.
He’d already seen ninja from that manga, Naruto. And the girls were prettier in person than on the pages of the Shonen Jump. At least in his opinion. He’d also seen plenty of characters from video games that he’d played back home, including the one with the two redheaded guys and the brunette with the huge breasts.
This place was….shaping up to be exciting. And there were no psycho killer cops in sight. It was a good vacation.
