( History ) :Kanji at the MST wiki

Kanji's early childhood isn't really delved into very much, as he isn't the main protagonist of the game/anime. However, we know that his family has own the textile store in Inaba for a few generations and it's fairly well-known for its quality products. One of the big clients for Tatsumi Textiles is Amagi-ya, the traditional inn owned by Amagi Yukiko, another member of the Investigation Team.

Kanji’s father is deceased and he lives with his mother. His father told him to become a real name after he passed, thus conflicting Kanji in what the definition of being a real man was, considering that he liked to sew and knit, not manly habits. In fact, his love of those past times left him open to ridicule by the boys he knew and rejection for being a “freak” by the girls around him, except for Yukiko. However, he didn’t spend much time with the older girl, since she was always busy at her family’s inn.

To compensate for this, Kanji started acting out, wearing clothing that made him seem tough, dyeing his hair blond and getting into fights. In fact, the first glimpse of Kanji is a recording on the nightly news about how he beat up an entire motorcycle gang.

( Personality ) :

Despite his tough appearance, Kanji enjoys to sew and knit. Yep, you read that right. This tall (he’s 6’) and rough looking guy likes to do some decidedly not very masculine hobbies. That could probably be blamed on the fact that his family owns the local textile store in Inaba and he’s the only son. However, he really just enjoys his hobbies and he doesn’t really care what anyone thinks.

At least, that’s what he’d like for you to believe. The fact of the matter is that Kanji cares very much what others think of him. He has tried to balance out his hobbies and his father’s last words to him about being a “real man”. Sadly, he is unable to do this and has thus begun to rebel against the loneliness that his “strange” hobbies have forced him into. Girls find him strange and creepy for doing “girly” things and guys teased and picked on him until he started to fight back.

As such, he spent a lot of time angry at those around him, while really wanting to have friends. When he first shows up as a character of interested in both the anime and the game, it is because he is on a news program, beating up a biker gang. Most of the kids in the school believe that he is now the leader of said gang, but he has nothing to do with them.

When he is later asked about the incident, he tells the Investigation Team that he was only trying to get the gang to go away so his mother could sleep, since the loud noises were keeping her awake at night. In the anime, the protagonist sees Kanji in the halls after seeing him on the Midnight Channel—making him a marked future victim of the killer of Inaba—where the taller boy drops a cute, pink, knitted doll. Kanji is, of course, extremely embarrassed and becomes a little aggressive as he attempts to get away completely.

When he meets Naoto, he finds the young detective attractive, but believing she is a guy, Kanji begins to question his sexuality. When he is abducted into the TV world, his dungeon is a steamy, questionable bath house filled with sweaty, well-muscled shadows. The battle with his Shadow is filled with questionably effeminate behaviour, meaning to remark on the fact that he might be homosexual. However, when it came down it, Kanji’s real problem is that he’s terrified of rejection, no matter the gender of the person. When he realizes this, through the help of the protagonist and the rest of the Investigation Team, he punches his Shadow in the face, knocking it out before accepting that as a part of himself. (He is the only member of the team to strike his Shadow.)

During his development with the rest of the team, he learns to become more comfortable with himself. He shows that he is a normal teenage boy with normal desires on the school camp-out by getting a nosebleed when Chie and Yukiko dress up in bathing suits. He also tries to prove his manliness to Yosuke by rushing into the girl’s side of the encampment, despite the fact that a very hostile teacher was patrolling to keep the boys from being in the girls’ tents.

He takes the teasing very well, for all intents and purposes, but it is only when Naoto is involved that it becomes an issue and you can see his shy side come out.

His Social Link is personified by the Emperor Arcana and begins in the game under the rumour of him bullying other students. The Protagonist can find him in the practice building near the sewing room. After asking to speak to Kanji, he then confronts him on the Flood Plains near the River, where Kanji reassures him that the accusations are false and the Emperor S. Link reaches level one.

At level 3 of the S. Link, the Protagonist has the option to encourage Kanji to make dolls for a young boy to help him with a girl he likes. This will also help Kanji to find the courage to sell said dolls at the textile shop his family owns. At the end of the Emperor S. Link (level 10), Kanji has a heart-to-heart talk at the Dojima residence where it is revealed about the complete reason for his sexuality confusion and how he has resolved it within himself—to do everything 100% and that he’s accepted completely his hobbies. He gives the Protagonist a cute phone strap and his Persona evolves to Rokuten Maou. He even teases that he’s going to start a puppet-making class that is to be held in his sempai’s room.

( Strengths/Weaknesses ) :

+ Kanji’s fighting style is more street brawler than trained warrior (he is literally a grappler), so that gives him some flexibility in battle.
- Since he is untrained, his fighting style is completely unorthodox and his weapons tend to be strange found items (such as a school desk or a shield taken from the weapon store).
- Despite his addition to the Investigation Team, he still has difficulty sometimes being comfortable around Naoto.
+ Kanji is actually a kind and caring friend and is completely loyal to Yu, since he was the first person to accept Kanji as himself.
+ Kanji’s Persona, Take-Mikazuchi or Rokuten Maou, are lightning-based with strong physical attacks and allows him to buff for attack and/or defence one ally per turn.
- He is weakest against water and fire based attacks
- He can still be hot-tempered and loud, especially when embarrassed.
+ He has learned to laugh at himself more, keeping the incidents of embarrassment down to a minimum.

( Other Important Facts ) :
Because Kanji is coming from the True End, meaning the fight where Izanami is defeated, he will have the Persona Rokuten Maou, meaning that his Social Link with Yu will be level 10 for the Emperor Arcana. Alternatively, he will not be coming with the skills that are obtained in either Golden or Arena.

( Sample ) :

After many talks with that Kanaya girl—and some annoying, but liveable teasing about being a guy and wanting to use the open workspace in her shop for his own projects—Kanji had settled into the shop nicely in the North-east quadrant of the city. He knew that his friends back at the detective agency wouldn't tease him about his hobbies. In fact, Yu-sempai, Yukiko-sempai and Naoto had never made a huge deal out of the fact that he liked sewing, knitting and all those decidedly domestic things that he’d tried to hide for so long.

Nah, they’d been great and supportive. Yu-sempai had even encouraged him to sell the little plush toys that he’d taken to making in his family’s textile shop back home. Yukiko-sempai had just taken his presence at his family’s shop as something that was pretty normal, and that was why she’d always been the one girl he’d never had trouble talking to, even before Yu-sempai had come to Inaba. And Naoto… Well, she had her own issues with her gender, so she was of the opinion that she couldn’t judge him for what he liked to do.

That was what he wanted to do now that he was stuck here in this Vatheon place. But, he was having issues finding the correct materials. Yeah, he wanted to make cute little fish-shaped plushies, but that didn’t mean he wanted to use subpar fabric and shitty thread. No, he wanted quality. He’d gotten used to it. And he knew when someone was trying to sell him shit. You didn’t fool a Tatsumi on something like that.

So, that’s why he was searching the shops both around the Nostalgia Nook and the other parts of the city. He was on a mission. And despite the scowl he wore, he was starting to get excited to have something to do. (Even if he missed his mother.)
