So, what's there to do around here? I've run through all the tiny projects I brought along with me. There's no school, no real selection of goods at the stores anymore, and I'm going insane.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Well, you know, if I'm out hunting all the time, I could just give you all the hides to do something with. Make some leather out of that? I suppose it'd take a few days for them to dry out before you could use it, but that would give you plenty to keep you busy in the short term?

That would be nice, actually. Can do more with the hides than just make leather. Need get my hands on some tannic acid. That won't be easy.

Then we've got a plan! Not like I really know what to do with the hides much anyway.

But yeah, I don't imagine getting that will be all that easy. So what sort of acid actually IS tannic acid?

No, that's fine. I have plenty of ideas about what to do with the hides. Winter's coming up after all.

And, fuck! Tannic acid is what they use to stain some woods. It's pretty foul stuff and stinks like you wouldn't believe. They used to use it for leather-making, but that was hundreds of years ago. Sometimes, my family still does it traditionally, but that takes forever. The trees are pretty common to get the tannin though.

The more modern way is to use regular table salt, hydrochloric acid and some sort of mineral, like chrome, to complete the tanning stages.

Easier to just buy it already made back home. No lie.

Well, maybe the smithy has some? I know in the future, we had to do a little bit of leatherworking for the pommels and such for some of the blades, though I always left that for others. You might find some here? I haven't really had any time to poke my head into every corner of the smithy here.

Otherwise, I bet your best bet here is the trees.

Yeah, at this point in time, I'm probably just going to have to try and make it by hand, unless someone around here already has some conveniently laying around. Which I doubt.

I guess it couldn't hurt to debark a few trees. If I can just remember which ones are the easiest.
